Custom Yeti SB140 Build

Enjoy some photos of thie Custom Yeti SB140 build featuring Onyx Vesper hubs laced to Nox Farlow rims.

This client wanted to build a bike that would look as good as it would ride. Using highlights of turquoise to set off the contrasting greys this bike is certainly a head turner.

Some of the build highlights include SRAM X01 AXS cranks, Deity Skywire handlebar and Copperhead stem, Shimano RT M800 rotors as well as the handbuilt Nox on Onyx wheelset.

More MTB Mullets – Comparing Travel, Headtube, Trail & Flop

More MTB Mullets – Comparing Travel, Headtube, Trail & Flop

An interesting question come across my email wondering about MTB Mullet setup. In particular headtube angles and performance. How did the headtube angle compare between the Yeti SB165 in a 27.5″ stock setup with a 180mm fork compared to the Mullet 29″ 170mm concept?

What started as a quick email reply of concept turned into a more thorough review and I thought with more questions on MTB mullets these days we could put it up on a post for everyone.

So, the disclaimers. I couldn’t find Yeti’s published SB165 Mullet geo so I build a model to review. These models aren’t gospel truth on geo, but having been in this game for a lot of years some of the geo’s you’ve seen published I wouldn’t take for gospel either. Point is, these numbers will give you an idea of the concept I wouldn’t bet the farm on precision four points behind the decimal…

Next disclaimer. It could be a thesis trying to explain how these changes directly modify performance so we’re not going there today. We’ll have some basic concept and comparison of how one change directly modifies a whole bunch of the handling.

OK here we go. Continue reading More MTB Mullets – Comparing Travel, Headtube, Trail & Flop

CushCore PRO vs XC Comparison

CushCore XC vs PRO Comparison

CushCore PRO vs XC Comparison

CushCore products provide both rim protection as well as tire performance enhancement. With the new lighter CushCore XC release we wanted to drop a quick CushCore Pro vs XC Comparison review for you.

The original CushCore, or CushCore PRO changed rim protection. Designed to not only keep your rims off rocks they also work as both a volume spacer for your tire PSI as well as changing the leverage point on the sidewall of your tire. Didn’t realize it did all that? We’ll touch more on that later.

The knocks on the CushCore offering was it takes a different technique to change tires and it’s rotating weight.

The definite upsides from the competition? It doesn’t absorb tubeless sealant and provides much more than simple snake bite protection.

Well with the launch of the CushCore XC riders have an option that provides great rim and tire protection while weighing in notably lighter than the PRO option.

Let’s look at some of the differences. Continue reading CushCore PRO vs XC Comparison

An introduction to Adaptive MTB with Jeremy McGhee

An introduction to Adaptive MTB with Jeremy McGhee

Recently I had a chance to hit the trails with Jeremy McGhee a rider on the cutting edge of the adaptive, or AMTB.

Jeremy and TrailForks are working to identify which trails are friendly to adaptive riding. Recording rides on a GoPro Jeremy documents a wide range of trails across the country. Terrain that’s fun, challenging, or in some cases impassable. Providing this data on his YouTube channel and through TrailForks rating system allows other adaptive riders to plan fun and adventurous rides without as many of the pitfalls he has experienced.

Pedaling a loop at Black Mountain in San Diego was a real eye opener to challenges, capabilities and potentials in adaptive off road riding. Continue reading An introduction to Adaptive MTB with Jeremy McGhee

Spinning Circles with Kevin Aiello – Pedal More Efficiently

Pedal More Efficiently - Spinning Circles with Kevin Aiello MTB Coach

Spinning Circles with Kevin Aiello – Pedal More Efficiently

Like a lot of jobs mine has perks. Lately one of those has been spending a lot of time in the shop and on the trail with Kevin Aiello from SoCalSpeedClinics.com. As I’ve mentioned Kevin blows me away with his MTB coaching aptitude. He sees something, gives you something to think about and you’re riding better. Kevin’s known for his DH and Free Ride skills. You know if you ask questions about cornering, steeps, chunk, jumping, etc he’s got you covered. So I tried to throw him for a loop with something less, ah, enduro I suppose. Help me pedal more efficiently.

We were chatting about my continual flats versus clipless inner dialogue. (which is coming as a write up soon) I mentioned I never felt really efficient on clipless (which was oft confirmed by my brother and Joe making fun of it) so maybe flats weren’t hurting me uphill. Kevin challenged my thinking on it.
