Float DPS Compression Controls

The Float DPS 2-position Remote rear shock provides riders a 2 position OPEN – FIRM switch. Remote switch sold separately.

FOX Float DPS 2 Position Remote Switch

A simple shift cable routes from the shock’s compression switch to a handlebar remote allowing quick shifts between OPEN and FIRM without taking your hands off the bars!

FOX Float DPS 2 position Rebound Adjustment

FOX Float DPS Rebound Adjustability

Low-speed rebound – 11 clicks

Rebound is set to compensate for the air spring driving the shock back to neutral after compression. You can learn more about how Rebound, Air Volume, Compression and PSI interact on the Learn More tab

Float DPS EVOL Air Sleeve Details

EVOL SV and EVOL LV

SV = Small Volume
LV = Large Volume

The DPS shock’s EVOL air sleeve is generally based on the shock’s eye to eye taking into account desired ramp rate as well as fitment concerns.

Few of the shocks have EVOL LV and SV offerings, its quite rare in the modern FOX lineup. An example is the 7.875×2 which is available in both – however most are available in one or the other. If you’re interested in a specific EVOL air sleeve with a specific shock dimension reach out to our team and we will see if its possible as well as what the upcharge will be!

(from FOX’s site)

Float DPS Max Pressure

FLOAT DPS EVOL and FLOAT X shocks have a maximum pressure of 350psi (24.1 bar)
FLOAT DPS Non-EVOL shocks have a maximum pressure of 300psi (20.7 bar)

Using the EVOL Air Sleeve

The EVOL air sleeve comes standard on FLOAT DPS and DPX2 models. The EVOL air sleeve provides an external negative air chamber integrated into the main air sleeve to significantly reduce the force to initiate travel, providing excellent small bump performance. The system is also more linear in its progression offering improved mid stroke support and better bottom out resistance. It is important to add or remove air from the EVOL sleeve as detailed below to experience the best possible performance.

When adding air to the air chamber, it is important to equalize the positive and negative air chambers by slowly compressing the shock through 25% of its travel 10-20 times after every 50psi addition.

Adding air to the shock without periodically equalizing the air chambers can lead to a condition in which the shock has more pressure in the positive chamber than the negative. In this condition the shock will be very stiff and can top-out. You can equalize the air chambers by slowly compressing the shock until you feel and hear a transfer of air. Hold the shock at this point for a few seconds to allow the air to transfer from the positive to the negative chamber.

When releasing air from the air chamber, it is important to do this slowly so the shock can transfer air from the negative to positive chamber and then be realeased through the Schrader valve.

Releasing the air pressure too quickly can induce a condition in which the negative chamber has more pressure than the positive chamber. In this condition the shock will compress into its travel and not fully extend. You can remedy this by adding air pressure until the shock extends, then slowly compressing the shock through 25% of its travel 10-20 times.

Float DPS: FOX Performance vs. Factory Kashima

There are a couple notable upgrades to the Factory DPS rear shocks compared to the FOX Performance lineup.

Low-Speed Compression

This is the biggest difference. The FOX Factory DPS offers a 3 position OPEN – MEDIUM – FIRM as well as the 3 position adjustability in the OPEN mode via the black adjuster (swings the point to 1 – 2 – 3 on the blue lever). This allows riders to use a low-speed damper control as well as volume spacing to fine tune the DPS’ support and bottom out.

This feature is exceptionally notable as your ground speeds increase as well as for larger riders.

Kashima Coating vs Black Ano

Without access to all of FOX’s testing I’m referencing my years of experience riding both FOX coatings as well as our background on custom shock manufacturing and tuning.

The Black Ano coating works well. I ran a Performance Elite fork with the black ano for years without noticing any wear in the coating.

The Kashima coating is slightly more “slippery” – which means less stiction – probably more notable for smaller riders.

When BikeCo has done custom internals or custom branded shocks we work closely with our coating specialists. Many of the additive packages aimed at producing a surface with less surface friction have an additional benefit that they work really well at negating or minimizing heat input on the shaft. This helps minimize performance changes to the shock during a fast run with thousands of shaft inputs. BTW: these additive packs tended to produce a rich, brown color… Just saying…

So in conclusion: Factory Shocks have notable advantages in overall tuning setup as well as direct benefits for large and small riders on different sides of the spectrum!

Comparing the Float DPS to other shocks

Designed for everything from XC race to light enduro the FOX Float DPS can be tuned for a wide range of riders in an even wider range of terrain.

As far as single can shocks the Factory DPS is the class leader with the most robust, confident performance and tuning controls to help you get your bike’s setup dialed in.

For bikes with tight clearance or smaller shock measurements the FOX Float DPS is the premium option.

Riders looking for additional heat capacity and a wider range of low-speed compression or rebound tuning will look at the FOX Float X which provides more “thump” than the poppier DPS shock.
