Here’s a quick go through on installing or trimming your MTB brake lines.
As always the disclaimer! If you have ANY doubts about your mechanical abilities, or about the results before you ride the bike contact a professional… This is really easy when it’s easy – but – you don’t want to be a hero with brakes when your, and frankly other trail users, safety is on the line.
Quick highlights of the video:
If you’re re-routing an internal brake line use a bent cable inserted in the brake hose. Insert the cable in the hose and PULL the hose out slowly through the bike. Insert the new brake hose on the bent cable and slowly PUSH the brake hose through the bike using the cable as a guide.
Use sharp cutters.
Make sure you have all the bits you’ll need including a new olive and barb. Ensure you have all of the parts on the line, in order, before you compress the fittings! (I’ve forgotten the cap, or put the cap on backwards once or twice over the years and if you compress the fittings, well, you’ll need more fittings)
Carefully tighten the assembly without over-tightening and damaging the brake lever. Bleed the brake as appropriate (bleed videos are available at BikeCo.com in our Tips & Tricks or Home Mechanic content sections)
Magura MT5 with HC Levers and Red Pucks, Disc Brake
Magura’s providing riders with a variety of upgrade options this year. These Magura MT5 NEXT brakes come with the upgraded HC lever as well as red pucks.
The HC lever is a single finger brake lever with an aggressive flair to help keep your finger located in the rough stuff.
These brakes also ship with the upgraded 4 piece brake pads (like the MT7s) which are easier to align and lighter.
Magura MT5 brakes have been a favorite at BikeCo for years. Great modulation. Excellent power. Reliable. What’s not to love?

More on the Magura HC Lever
Magura MT brakes offer a variety of lever options. There are two major reasons for this. Preference and Performance.
With the available power of hydraulic brakes 1 finger braking is the preferred technique on any lever. So why not only offer 1 finger levers like the HC lever?
The shorter throw on Magura’s 1 finger levers reduce the amount of throw between open and closed. Since the power comes on a bit quicker the Magura 1 finger levers add a bit of “snap” to the brakes. This is illustrated above with the purple / teal levers and arc to the right.
Conversely the longer 2 finger levers require longer throw between open and closed. This provides riders with some additional modulation to control power application. The red and gold levers above illustrate this.
