Ripley AF SLX Suspension

Shock FOX Performance 34, 130mm
Ibis Ripley AF SLX build Suspension detail

SLX Suspension Details

Ripley AF builds feature FOX Performance suspension.

Fork is spec’d with Float 34 Performance at 130mm travel with GRIP damper. This gives riders 10 clicks of rebound adjustment as well as 3 positions of compression control. Like all FOX air forks support and ramp rate can be modified with volume spacers.

The rear shock is spec’d with the FOX Performance DPS. This shock provides adjustable rebound as well as a climb switch. The DPS’s ramp rate and support can be modified with volume spacers to allow a wide tune range.

Ripley AF Suspension Upgrade

Going to a 140mm air shaft is the most popular upgrade for the Ripley AF suspension. This gives the bike a slighlty more relaxed geometry allowing it to confidently rider into bigger terrain. The longer axle to crown measurement slackens the headtube angle and raises the bottom bracket. Both geo changes you’d expect to see on longer travel bikes.

Wondering if the 140mm fork is for you? Chat with our team for details on which rider prefers the 140 versus the stock 130mm option.

Another upgrade we see is the replacement of the FOX GRIP damper with the GRIP2. With the GRIP2 on the Performance chassis riders have a Performance Elite fork. The GRIP2 provides high and low speed compression as well as rebound adjustments.

If you’re looking for more out of your suspension you should learn more about our proprietary Pro Tune service. BikeCo Pro Tunes shift the performance window of the fork and shock narrowing them based on your riding specifics.

You can read more about the advantages and setup of the Factory 34 GRIP2 and DPS by following the links below:

FOX has the best suspension on the market – but why not make it even better? At BikeCo our suspension team will narrow the performance band of the stock suspension based on your size, riding style, ground speed, aspirations and terrain.

The abridged version? FOX is build for every rider size at every riding speed. You’re not every rider! Chat with our team about how BikeCo Pro Tune suspension will take your riding to the next level. Because Every Click Counts.

SLX Drivetrain Details

The SLX drivetrain is the top tier factory option from Ibis on the Ripley AF.

Shimano’s SLX drivetrain provides a great balance of weight, performance and price. Coming in lighter and with a bit longer service life than the Deore option this is the most popular Shimano Ripley AF build.

Drivetrain Upgrades

Some SLX riders will upgrade to a higher Shimano chain for a slightly more fluid feel. Other riders will consider this later during service replacement and consider the XT chain and XT cassette.

While not for everyone some riders have found the SRAM GX AXS paired to the Shimano SLX drivetrain is a great wireless shifting option. Wondering if this is an upgrade you’ll be looking for? Chat with our team about how the mixed drivetrain performance and what rider appreciates this.

SLX Wheel and Tire Details

Ibis’ Blackbird Send rims laced to Ibis Logo hubs are a great spec on the Ripley AF SLX kit. The 35mm internal rim width provides a large volume tire shape for maximum traction. Do you prefer slightly narrower rims? Looking for other options on the SLX build?

Popular wheel upgrades typically feature more robust hub systems such as Chris King, Industry Nine or Onyx are popular. Do you prefer aluminum rims like the WTB, RideFast or Factor? Carbon rims improve power transfer and tracking. Popular options include NOX or Ibis Carbon to suit your riding. At BikeCo.com our expert wheel builders have you covered. Carbon or aluminum. Medium or high volume. We know what wheel will compliment your riding.

Ripley AF Tire Swaps and Upgrades

Getting the right tires on the SLX Ripley AF is important for the bike’s personality.

The Ibis’ Ripley AF tire spec can be seen as aggressive for a lot of riders preference.

The front tire spec’d by Ibis is the Maxxis Minion DHR II with EXO sidewall. The DHR II is a tire many riders will like as a front option. It has a bit more braking capacity than the Minion DHF. The DHF is a faster rolling option and available in EXO, EXO Plus as well as Double down sidewalls.

While some riders swap the front tire, most will consider swapping the Dissector spec’d in the rear. The two most common tires found on the rear of the Ripley are the Maxxis Minion DHR II or the Maxxis Aggressor. Both of these are faster rolling than the Dissector. Riders have a range of sidewalls and widths between the DHR II and the Aggressor for a rear tire.

Already have a favorite tire combo? Let’s get you dialed in. Tires are a very personal feel and if you prefer an EXO Plus rear, or a Double Down front, or a DHF, Dissector, Aggressor, whatever – let’s get you setup right, right out of the box.

Looking for rim protection? We have you covered there too. Chat with our team to get CushCore Pro or XC rim protection installed before delivery.

SLX Cockpit & Brakes Details

Like tires we often see cockpit and brakes upgraded and swapped.

Do you have a grip / bar / stem combo in mind? Great, let’s dial in your build.

Why upgrade the cockpit? Fit is critical on your bike. Some riders need bars with different rises for the best performance. There are options in aluminum and carbon that are popular on the Ripley AF.

If changing bars most SLX riders prefer a 35mm diameter cockpit. Alloy bars from Renthal or Tag are frequently spec’d. 35mm diameter carbon handlebars are the most popular cockpit update. Options from OneUp, Tag, Renthal and RaceFace are available in a variety of rises to fine tune your fit. Bars also have various levels of compliance and getting a bar right for your weight and riding style goes a long way to improving your trail experience.

Brakes are an important factor in your bike’s overall personality.

Popular Brake Swaps & Upgrades to the Ibis Ripley AF SLX

BikeCo offers the best brakes from Shimano, TRP, Hope and Magura.

Riders looking for great power with snappy performance gravitate to Shimano SLX, XT and XTR brakes.

TRP offers even a little more power with slightly improved modulation compared to Shimano.

With the Tech 4 Hope has increased their total power in-line with Shimano and Magura without compromising their amazing modulation.

Magura continues to be the most popular aftermarket brake, especially installed on new builds. We will credit you for any part swaps and with the variety of Magura price points most riders find the MT5 and MT7 brakes provide unbeatable value. Magura brakes offer great total power and top tier modulation without feeling soft. Magura offers a variety of brake levers to help riders fine tune their performance.

Points for the WTB Silverado saddle? It is a classic for a reason: it’s comfortable and it works.

One popular upgrade we see on many bikes is upgrading the seatpost remote. Options from PNW and Wolftooth tend to be the upgrade go-to.

Compare the Ibis Ripley AF UDH Completes

Designed to parallel the carbon Ripley’s trail performance, the alloy Ripley AF UDH is an acknowledge class leader.

Like all Ibis bikes it’s a confident, comfortable bike in a wide range of terrain.

Ibis’ spec options provide riders a lot of value across the board. In fact, many experienced riders would enjoy a Ripley AF UDH build with minor updates as a quiver bike as well. What updates might you consider on the Ripley AF UDH? Let’s take a look at the similarities, key differences as well as common swaps and upgrades in the tabs below.

Ibis Ripley: Carbon or Aluminum

So what are the trail differences between the Ripley and the Ripley AF UDH? Let’s get into it.

Below you can compare the geometry – overall they’re very close. As you’d expect the main difference is between the aluminum and carbon fiber material properties.

Ibis makes high quality aluminum bikes. The Ripmo AF UDH  and Ripley AF UDH are trail proven. They’ve got mileage and experience that make them ready for anything you’ll want to throw at it.

The material differences riders can feel between the carbon and aluminum Ripley will be weight, a bit of damping and vibrancy.

Weight matters, and it tends to matter more on lighter trail bikes, however riders typically won’t choose one or the other simply based on weight.

Carbon fiber provides additional damping. This is based on the weaved material, the layup as well as shapes to transfer load that carbon lends itself to. The aluminum bike will transfer a bit more of the trail frequency to the rider. However, with carbon bars such as the OneUp or Tag models offering designed damping Ripley AF UDH riders can upgrade cockpit for improved damping.

Another material difference is found in how vibrant the frame will feel. Carbon bikes tend to have and maintain a bit more of a vibrant feel longer into their service life.

The only riders shopping aluminum that I ask to take a long look at the materials are, well riders like me! If you’re a heavier rider (I’m somewhere in the 260 range these days) the carbon fiber will stay vibrant notably longer. Heavier or really aggressive riders may find the aluminum will work harden, which ironically means it will get softer, and the bikes aren’t as crisp a couple seasons in.

Ibis Ripley AF Kit Differences

The aluminum Ripley AF is available 2 Shimano options and a SRAM GX kit.

Shimano Deore and SLX Kits

SLX components will be a bit lighter than the Deore kit. Overall the performance in Shimano stays crisp across lineup, however the SLX kit tends to have a slightly longer service life.

The SLX kit also features the upgraded Bike Yoke Revive dropper post.

SRAM GX Complete

The Ripley AF is available in a SRAM GX kit as well. Overall the SRAM cable drivetrains will shift in a wider range or adjustment than the Shimano offerings. The other side of this coin is while Shimano shifts quite smooth the SRAM drivetrains have a bit more thump to them.

A popular option for the GX complete, as well as the SLX build for some riders, is an upgrade to the GX AXS derailleur and shifter. Read more about this on the upgrade tab.

Common Ibis Ripley AF UDH upgrades and swaps

Ibis Ripley AF Upgrades and Swaps

BikeCo is the leading resource to help riders get the most out of their builds. Bikes like the Ripley AF start with a good spec from Ibis, but with a couple tweaks you might find even more performance available or a personality you’ll love even more.

You won’t find any “no-go” components on the Deore, GX or SLX Ripley AF bikes. However, it’s common for riders to develop component preferences. BikeCo will get you that perfect part, in the right color to personalize the Ripley AF’s performance or look.

Common Ripley AF Upgrades

Part swaps and upgrades on cost conscious bikes tend to go one of two ways. Some riders don’t feel like they’ll notice the difference with their skill set and others figure they’ll update when bits wear out.

Both of these have credibility – but – let’s look at how each rider benefits from working with the experts here at BikeCo.com.

Will I notice? Fair question, especially for riders newer to the sport. Areas where you will most notice the spec are cockpit (for sizing), brakes and tires (for personality) as well as suspension (for tuning).

One thing for newer riders: it’s easier to learn when something is working great. That’s why so many new riders gravitate to The Bike Company. Our unmatched after sales tuning and setup provides you with a working resource to fine tune your new bike.

I’ll replace it when it wears out. For things like drivetrain, seatpost, saddle, seatpost remote etc this can make a lot of sense. In fact my personal bikes generally have a nicer drivetrain when they’re serviced as I can justify that $ more easily when I’m not buying an entire bike! However, why wait on things that have such a dramatic effect on a bike’s personality? I want the right tires for my riding. I don’t want to wait to wear out tires I don’t like! Same with brakes. And getting a proper cockpit fit is critical.

Don’t worry. BikeCo has you covered across all of these.

Suspension

The longer 140mm fork option on the Ripley AF. Increasing the fork travel will slacken the headtube and slightly raise the bottom bracket. This gives the Ripley AF a bit more of an Enduro feel. Riders looking for a bit more punch in the Ripley AF will love that 140mm fork. Those looking for quicker handling or more of a down-country or XC feel will stay with the 130mm fork options.

Rider Contact Points

Many riders have a go-to grip and pedal preference.

We can provide a range of grips with variable patterns, technology and shape to improve your riding. There might even be a grip in a color to set off your Protein Shake or Mustard Stain Ripley AF.

New build – new pedals? We have the best clipless and flat options for a wide range of riding styles.

Tires

Another preference riders develop is “must-have” tire spec. This is one of the most common swaps on builds from any manufacturer. With notable performance differences between tread pattern, compound and sidewall lets make sure we get you on the perfect tire setup.

Many Ripley riders are looking for faster tires than the spec’d DHR II front and Dissector rear. What are popular specs? DHF front, DHR II rear or DHF front and Aggressor rear. Depending on your weight, terrain and level of aggression you might consider more robust sidewalls as well. EXO Plus and Double Down tires are popular options for riders looking for more robust protection or additional damping.

Looking for rim protection? We have that covered too.

Cockpit

A common swap or upgrade to Ibis Factory Spec bikes are the handlebars and stem. Many riders swap to a 35mm diameter combo over the stock 31.8mm options.

Getting the fit correct is important to your Ripley’s performance. Handlebar rise and overall stiffness also improve the personalization and performance of your bike. Looking for suggestions? We have the best in the market from OneUp, Tag, Renthal and Raceface.

Chat with our team about hand positioning, carbon versus aluminum as well as advantages of the right handlebar rise on your new rig.

Brakes

This is one of the most common swaps or upgrades on any bike. Brakes that compliment your riding style and preference make a huge difference on trail. We offer class leading options in a variety of price points from Hope, Magura, Shimano and TRP.

Shimano brakes are very popular and are spec’d on several of the build options. Shimano brakes have good overall power with quick lever throw. This produces a brake with a strong feel.

TRP brakes are similar to the Shimano lineup. The TRP brakes provide a touch more overall power and extra modulation compared to Shimano offerings.

Riders who prefer a bit more modulation or “feel” to their brakes gravitate towards Hope and Magura.

The latest Hope Tech 4 updates have improved their power. This puts the Hope Tech 4 in the Shimano and Magura range for overall power while retaining the excellent modulation Hope has been known for.

Magura brakes are the most frequent swap or upgrade across all Ibis builds. Riders who appreciate modulation and power will find Magura excellent in both aspects. Magura offers models with across a wide price range allowing budget friendly swaps or upgrades. Riders looking for the most adjustability or tuning for their brakes will shop the MT7 with HC3 levers.

Pro Tune Suspension

Take your bike’s performance to the next level with our proprietary Pro Tune Suspension. Our team will custom tune your FOX fork and rear shock and narrow the performance from the FOX Factory range to a more precise setup designed for your riding style, aggression, ground speed, size and terrain.

This is one of the biggest upgrades to any bike – having the suspension dialed in as well as having a resource like BikeCo to help you fine tune the bike at time of delivery and as your riding speeds increase!

BikeCo Pro Tune Suspension – because Every Click Counts.

FOX Performance Suspension

All of the Ripley AF builds feature FOX Performance Suspension.

The stock fork is a 130mm Float 34 Performance with the FIT GRIP damper. This provides riders with 3 positions of compression damping: Open, Medium and Firm. Low speed rebound offers 10 clicks of adjustment.

The Float 34 Performance can have the air shaft swapped to increase the fork travel to 140mm. In fact, a popular upgrade to the Performance fork is the GRIP2 damper. This creates a Performance Elite fork with improved high and low speed compression as well as rebound settings.

With a FOX Performance DPS rear shock riders have external rebound adjustments as well as a two position climb switch. Using volume spacers riders can fine tune ramp rate and support.

Use the tabs below for more info on the Ripley AF UDH Geo, compare sizes with the Geo Chart as well as see how the Ripley AF UDH measures up against otherTrail MTB bikes on the Comparison tab.

With it’s stock 130mm fork the Ripley AF has a 66.5 degree headtube angle. More aggressive Ripley AF riders may prefer the 140mm fork option. This produces a slightly slacker headtube angle and taller bottom bracket.

Ibis’ shows the Ripley AF sizing crossover as fairly minimal. For instance the taller end of the medium is listed at 5’8″ while the lower end of the large is listed at 5’7″. This is a decent baseline, but leg / arm versus torso length should be considered for exact sizing if you’re close to the size edges.

The Ripley AF sizing is based rider height as well as leg and arm length. Riders who find their height in the cross-over of sizes will determine the better size based typically on inseam, flexibility and riding style.

Those with longer legs tend to upsize to improve riding position. This will increase the wheelbase and produce a bike with a bit more overall speed capacity that isn’t quite as snappy as a smaller option would be.

Riders with longer torsos or looking for a more “poppy” trail feel will tend to downsize. Although, with modern MTB frames designed to accommodate increased dropper post lengths riders who prefer the added wheelbase may upsize – so long as the reach doesn’t compromise stem size availability or put a rider “too far” over the front wheel.

The Ripley AF provides very similar jumps between sizes for the Stack, Reach and Top Tube.

Wondering which bike provides you the best fit? Our expert team is here to help you define how your size, riding style, terrain and aspirations will effect your ideal sizing.

Ibis Ripley Frame Details

Ripley V4S Headset Spec
Upper ZS44 – Zero Stack, Press Fit
Lower ZS56 – Zero Stack, Press Fit
Ibis Ripley Frame Headtube Details

Ripley Headset Details

The Ibis Ripley uses a press fit, zero stack headset. This combo features ZS44 upper and ZS56 lower.

Having the headset installed prior to frame shipment is common for many home builders.

Carbon fiber frames don’t like to have press fit components driven in and out. That means headsets are also a popular place to use a top quality component. We suggest Cane Creek 110 or Chris King headsets. With proper service these should last the lifetime of your Ripley frame.

Can I Use an Angleset Headset? There would be extremely few conditions that we would use an angleset. Riders looking for a slacker, more aggressive Ripley are better suited increasing the fork travel to 140mm. This keeps the steer tube concentric in the carbon fiber headset as designed while it will slacken the headtube and slightly increase the bottom bracket – both great for riding bigger, burlier terrain. Slackening the bike with a 130mm fork will actually lower the BB – counter intuitive to the slacker headtube advantages.

Ripley V4S Suspension Spec
Shock FOX Factory DPS, 190x45mm. Included with Frame.
Fork Stock spec 130mm. 140mm option.

Ripley Suspension Details

Featuring the FOX Factory DPS shock the Ripley is dialed in for the down-country and trail rider.

Some riders may look into the slightly more robust FOX Float X. This provides the Ripley a more aggressive trail and light enduro setup. However, availability from FOX on the 190×45 Float X can affect build timelines.

Ripley Suspension Upgrade

Wish the Ripley was a bit slacker? Or had a touch higher bottom bracket? These shifts will change how the Ripley changes direction as well as it’s comfort level in bigger terrain. Riders looking for this should definitively speak to us about the 140mm fork option.

Other than adding a bit more travel the additional fork length increases the axle to crown which modifies the geo. Geo shifts include a slightly slacker headtube angle, increased trail measurement, and taller bottom bracket height.

Chat with our team adding a fork to your Ripley frame order and get it right, right out of the box.

Ripley Frame Bottom Bracket & Chainline Details

The Ibis Ripley Frame utilizes a threaded 73mm BSA bottom bracket. Depending on your crank selection there are a variety of bottom brackets available.

Many home-builders have us install the bottom bracket prior to shipping the frame.

Chris King is a popular bottom bracket for Ibis bikes. A range of adapters allows both SRAM and Shimano specs to be used.

Ibis Ripley Chainline

The current Ripley chainline, or the Ripley V4S, is a 55mm chainline to be compatible with the SRAM UDH derailleur hanger.

Previously the Ripley used a narrower width chainline – but the narrower crank spec places the chainring closer to the triangle and negatively impacts shifting.

Wondering if you have the right cranks for the project? Chat with our team, or even better – order your cranks through BikeCo and we will ensure you get the right setup for the new chainline standard.

GX Transmission Suspension Details

The FOX Factory 34 fork and DPS rear shock are a great spec for the GX Transmission Ripley.

FOX’s Float 34 GRIP2 has high speed and low speed adjustments for both rebound and compression. The GRIP2 damper is ideal for aggressive riders or those looking for maximum tune range. Riders looking for a more XC personality often swap dampers to the FIT4 option. Debating which damper or fork length is right for your riding? No problem. Our team is here to help you define which option will fit best with your terrain, aspirations and build.

FOX Factory DPS shocks feature rebound, a climb switch as well as three low speed compression settings for the Open mode. Some riders investigate the FOX Float X for a slightly more aggressive shock, however, the timeline on the Float X 190x45mm has been hit or miss.

Ripley Suspension Upgrade

Nearly equally popular are the BikeCo Pro Tune service, for fork and shock, as well as a 140mm fork option for the Ripley.

BikeCo Pro Tunes shift the performance window of the fork and shock narrowing them based on your riding specifics.

The 140mm fork option gives the Ripley a slightly slacker headtube angle and higher bottom bracket. This is popular for riders pushing deeper into the Enduro riding style or those who prefer a bit slower handling.

Wondering if a 140mm Ibis Ripley is right for you? Our team is here to help you define how the geo shift from the 130mm fork gives the Ripley a bit more capacity for bigger terrain and speed.

GX Transmission Wheel and Tire Details

The stock wheels on the GX Transmission build are 35mm internal width Blackbird Send rims laced to Ibis hubs. This is a great high volume, maximum traction alloy setup. A common upgrade for riders looking for a high volume carbon option is the Ibis Carbon rim with Industry Nine hub offered from the Factory.

Prefer another option? You want the absolutely perfect Ripley build?

Custom wheels are a great way to fine tune the look and performance of your RIpley. Many riders upgrade to hub systems such as Chris King, Industry Nine or Onyx. BikeCo highlights great aluminum rims from WTB, RideFast or Factor. We also have class leading carbon rim options.

Carbon rims improve power transfer and tracking. Rims from NOX or Ibis are available in wide or narrow rim widths to suit your riding. BikeCo has unbeatable in-house wheel builders. Carbon or aluminum. Medium or high volume. We know what wheel will compliment your riding. Our custom wheel builds provide riders tuned performance to improve traction and power transfer.

Ripley Tire Swaps and Upgrades

Swapping the tires is common on the Ibis Ripley. The Ripley GX Transmission tire spec is on the aggressive side for a down-country and trail oriented bike.

The factory spec front tire is the Maxxis Minion DHR II with EXO sidewall.

Do you already have the perfect bar, stem and grip setup? Great. Let’s put it on your build.

Wondering about some of the popular GX Transmission cockpit upgrades we see?

35mm diameter cockpits are frequent upgrades to the Ibis cockpit. Options from OneUp, Tag, Renthal and RaceFace are available in a variety of rises to fine tune your fit. Handlebars have various levels of compliance. Getting a bar right for your weight and riding style goes a long way to improving your trail experience.

Brakes are an important factor in your bike’s overall personality.

Popular Brake Swaps & Upgrades to the Ibis Ripley GX Transmission

XT Suspension Details

On the Ibis Ripley XT complete riders find FOX Factory fork and shock.

The FOX Float 34 GRIP2 offers high speed and low speed adjustments for both rebound and compression.

Riders know what to expect from the XT’s performance. It’s a great option coming in a bit lighter than the SLX kit.

Riders might upgrade to the XTR level chain, but it’s hard to beat the XT kit out of the box for overall value.

Another upgrade we see to the XT drivetrain , and not for everyone, however some riders have found the SRAM GX AXS paired to the Shimano SLX or XT drivetrain is a great wireless shifting option. Maybe you want the absolutely perfect Ripley build? Often we see XT builds upgraded with custom wheels. Interest tends to gravitate to more robust hub systems such as Chris King, Industry Nine or Onyx. Popular aluminum rims from WTB, RideFast or Factor are often seen on XT bikes. A lot of Ripley XT buyers will investigate the Ibis carbon rim upgrade. A good upgrade from Ibis these feature i9 Hydra hubs on 35mm internal Ibis carbon rims.

Carbon rims improve power transfer and tracking. Not sure that you’re interested in high volume wheels? No issues. Our wheel builders have you covered. We often build with options like NOX or narrower Ibis Carbon to suit your riding. BikeCo has unbeatable in-house wheel builders. Carbon or aluminum. Medium or high volume. We know what wheel will compliment your riding. Our custom wheel builds provide riders tuned performance to improve traction and power transfer.

Ripley Tire Swaps and Upgrades

Swapping the tires is common on the Ibis Ripley XT complete since the Ripley tire spec is on the aggressive side.

The factory spec front tire is the Maxxis Minion DHR II with EXO sidewall.

35mm diameter cockpits are frequent upgrades to the XT cockpit. Occasionally alloy bars from Renthal or Tag are spec’d. More often however we see riders upgrade to a 35mm diameter.

Popular Brake Swaps & Upgrades to the Ibis Ripley XT

Ibis Ripley GX Kit Suspension Details

GX Suspension Details

Each Ibis factory Ripley is spec’d with the class leading FOX Factory suspension.

The FOX Float 34 GRIP2 features Kashima coated uppers as well as high speed and low speed adjustments for both rebound and compression. The GRIP2 damper is ideal for aggressive riders or those looking for maximum tune range. Riders looking for a more XC personality often swap dampers to the FIT4 option. Wondering which is right for you? Chat with our team to define how to get the perfect Ripley personality for your riding.

With the FOX Factory DPS riders have rebound, a climb switch as well as three low speed compression settings for the Open mode. Some riders investigate the FOX Float X for a slightly more aggressive shock, however, the timeline on the Float X 190x45mm has been hit or miss.

Ripley Suspension Upgrade

The most common suspension upgrades to the Ibis Ripley are our Pro Tune service as well as 140mm air shafts for forks.

Chat with our team about riding styles and terrain conditions that benefit the 140mm fork on an Ibis Ripley!

GX Drivetrain Details

Ibis uses the SRAM GX drivetrain to power it’s most cost-conscious build. SRAM Eagle is known for it’s longevity and its extended service intervals.

The GX build utilizes wear parts that are often upgraded at the service intervals including the chain and cassette.

What are the most common upgrades to the Ripley GX drivetrain? While SRAM NX cranks get the job done a common upgrade is to jump to the GX or other aluminum cranks.

Some riders update to the SRAM GX AXS wireless derailleur and shifter. With the release of the GX AXS Transmission Ripley the AXS upgrade is less common on this build spec.

GX Wheel and Tire Details

A popular high-volume option Ibis’ Blackbird Send rims laced to Ibis Logo hubs are a great option for this build.

If you’re looking for something a bit different more robust hub systems such as Chris King, Industry Nine or Onyx are popular. Consider whether you’ll prefer aluminum rims like the WTB, RideFast or Factor or whether the improved power transfer and tracking of carbon like NOX or Ibis Carbon suit your riding. At BikeCo.com our expert wheel builders have you covered. Carbon or aluminum. Medium or high volume. We know what wheel will compliment your riding.

Ripley Tire Swaps and Upgrades

One area we see many riders swap or upgrade the SLX Ripley is tires.

Ibis’ Ripley tire spec is a bit aggressive for a lot of riders preference.

Have a favorite tire combo? Let’s get you dialed in. Tires are a very personal feel and if you prefer an EXO Plus rear, or a Double Down front, or a DHF, Dissector, Aggressor, whatever – let’s get you setup right, right out of the box.

Looking for rim protection? We have you covered there too. Chat with our team to get CushCore Pro or XC rim protection installed before delivery.

GX Cockpit & Brakes Details

Cockpit and brakes spec are a common place for upgrades and swaps.

Do you have a grip / bar / stem combo in mind? Great, let’s dial in your build.

So what are common upgrades to the GX build cockpit?

Riders often will update to a 35mm diameter cockpit with alloy bars from Renthal or Tag. Another very popular option is to go to 35mm diameter carbon handlebars. We work with OneUp, Tag, Renthal and RaceFace. These bars are available in a variety of rises to fine tune your fit. Bars also have various levels of compliance and getting a bar right for your weight and riding style goes a long way to improving your trail experience.

With so much personality dependent on your brake selection its’ no wonder we see SO many spec changes here.

Popular Brake Swaps & Upgrades to the Ibis Ripley GX

We offer the best brakes from Shimano, TRP, Hope and Magura.

Ibis Top Tier Carbon & FOX Factory Suspension

Each Ripley kit begins with the same details. Ibis’ top tier carbon frame as well as FOX Factory suspension.

Unlike some brands Ibis feature top tier carbon fiber layup across all price level kits. This is advantageous as riders benefit from lighter weight, a more vibrant feel as well as a longer service life.

Both fork and shock on the Ripley are FOX Factory offerings. FOX Factory suspension features the Kashima coating as well as the most advanced dampers on the market.

On the fork riders find the GRIP2 damper. This damper provides controls for high and low sped compression as well as rebound.

The DPS shock provides riders with rebound, climb switch as well as 3 positions of low speed compression adjustment to the Open mode.

Key Ibis Ripley Kit Differences

Ibis offers the Ripley in two Shimano kit as well as three SRAM build kits.

Shimano SLX and XT Kits

Shimano bikes are known for their crisp shifting. Both the SLX and XT bikes feature 12sp drivetains with 10-51t cassettes.

XT components are slightly lighter than their SLX counterparts. The XT bits also feature slightly more exotic materials for both weight saving and service life.

Handlebar and stem are other differences in the build. XT builds provide Ibis’ carbon handlebar and i9 stems. The SLX bikes are spec’d with Ibis aluminum components.

SRAM GX, GX Transmission and XX Transmission

Ibis offers great value with their Ripley GX bikes. The GX builds are very rideable, cost-conscious options. Here is a bike you can order and enjoy without “needing” any upgrades. Some of this is based around the top tier FOX Factory suspension and top quality carbon fiber frame.

Other manufacturers may cut corners on suspension and frame for entry level bikes. Ibis knows your GX Ripley should have the same personality as much as any other spec Ripley. Particularly in these critical components.

The GX Transmission and XX Transmission feature the latest SRAM wireless shifting and drivetrain technology.

SRAM’s T-Type design is featured on both AXS Transmission specs. T-Type drivetrains are the strongest and longest lasting on the market.

SRAM Transmission also sets a new bar for auto setup and tuning options. Chat with our team about more advantages of the Transmission spec.

Differences between the GX Transmission and XX Transmission Builds

Riders find the XX Transmission bits are slightly lighter and  may feature more exotic materials. Carbon wheels and a wireless seatpost are the main upgrade factors on the Ripley XX Transmission bikes.

XX Transmission bikes have Ibis Carbon rims with i9 Hydra hubs. XX Transmission builds spec wireless SRAM Reverb AXS Seatposts.

With GX Transmission bikes riders find Ibis Aluminum Blackbird Send rims laced to Ibis hubs. (A popular option is upgrading to the Ibis Carbon rims and i9 hubs at times of purchase) Ibis’ GX Transmission builds also feature the Bike Yoke Revive Seatpost.

Common Ibis Ripley Upgrades

Ibis Ripley Upgrades and Swaps

Whether you’re shopping for a full custom Ibis Ripley or just need a couple tweaks to the Ripley build BikeCo.com is your resource.

The Ibis Ripley is available in 5 kits, all of which are great “out of the box”. Really you won’t find any “no-go” components on the GX, SLX, XT, GX Transmission or XX Transmission Ripley builds. But, riders develop component preferences. BikeCo will get you that perfect part, in the right color to personalize the Ripley’s performance or look.

Common Ripley Upgrades

What are common Ripley swaps and upgrades at time of purchase? Let’s take a look. Some spec changes are personal preference. Others are budget or performance choices. Read on to see see where client’s often find upgrades to their new Ripley build. Already have questions? Chat, email or call our expert sales staff and we will help you buy the perfect Ibis Ripley.

Suspension

A lot of riders gravitate to the longer 140mm fork option on the Ripley. Increasing the fork travel will slacken the headtube and slightly raise the bottom bracket. This gives the Ripley a bit more of an Enduro feel. Riders looking for a bit more punch in the Ripley will love that 140mm fork. Those looking for quicker handling or more of a down-country or XC feel will stay with the 130mm fork although some will prefer a FIT4 damper over the GRIP2 stock offering.

Rider Contact Points

Many riders have a go-to grip and pedal preference.

We can provide a range of grips with variable patterns, technology and shape to improve your riding. There might even be a grip in a color to set off your Drywall or Bad Apple Red Ripley.

Custom Wheels

Handbuilt or custom wheels are another popular upgrade no matter what brand you’re shopping. Custom wheels allow riders to spec a rim, spoke and hub combination as well as build specifics for the ultimate performance.

Custom wheels for Ibis builds usually feature slightly narrower rim options. This will decrease the volume slightly as well as shifting the tire’s shape to provide more grip in high lean cornering. We see many riders work with NOX carbon or WTB, Factor and RideFast alloy options.

Riders also will find traction from using the right spokes and build techniques. Our team will help you define this at time of purchase to ensure you maximize performance and longevity.

Popular hubs from Chris King, Industry Nine, Onyx and Factor are spec’d on Ibis Ripley builds. All of these hubs are available in a range of colors to highlight your build.

Wireless Shifting

While the XX AXS and GX AXS kit feature the new SRAM Transmission the GX and even the SLX and XT are popular options for the standard AXS upgrade. Equally popular are the GX or X01 AXS kits for this purpose.

Ripley Suspension Details

Chat with our team about riding styles and terrain conditions that benefit the 140mm fork on an Ibis Ripley!

Ibis Ripley Geometry

The Ripley is offered in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large. This gives riders from 5’0″ to 6’6″ options on the Ripley.

The 130mm fork creates a 66.5 degree headtube angle on the Ripley. A slightly slacker headtube is available with the 140mm fork.

Ibis’ shows the Ripley sizing crossover as fairly minimal. For instance the taller end of the medium is listed at 5’8″ while the lower end of the large is listed at 5’7″.

Ibis bikes like the Ripley are sized based rider height as well as leg and arm length.

The Ripley provides very similar jumps between sizes for the Stack, Reach and Top Tube. Standover height between Medium and Large has a notable difference for riders in that size range.

Wondering which bike provides you the best fit? Our expert team is here to help you define how your size, riding style, terrain and aspirations will effect your ideal sizing.

Ibis Ripmo AF Frame Details

Ripmo AF Headset Spec
Upper ZS44 – Zero Stack, Press Fit
Lower ZS56 – Zero Stack, Press Fit
Ibis Ripmo AF Frame Headtube Detail

Ripmo AF Headset Details

The Ripmo AF frame uses a ZS44 upper and ZS56 lower press fit headset.

Since a quality headset press makes installation much easier many home builders will have BikeCo press a the headset prior to shipment.

Upgrades for the Ripmo AF headst spec are the Cane Creek 110 or Chris King headsets. With proper service these should last the lifetime of your Ripmo AF.

Can I Use an Angleset Headset? There would be extremely few conditions that we would use an angleset. Riders looking for a slacker, more aggressive Ripmo AF are better suited increasing the fork travel to 170mm. This keeps the steer tube concentric in the headset. Additionally a longer fork will slacken the headtube and slightly increase the bottom bracket – both great for riding bigger, burlier terrain. Slackening the bike, with an angleset and 160mm fork will actually lower the BB and stack – counter intuitive to the goals of a slacker headtube.

Use these tabs to review and compare the Ripmo AF geo to other enduro bikes from Ibis, Mondraker, Nukeproof and Yeti.

The Ripmo AF is offered in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large and X-Large. Riders from 5′ to 6′ 5″ are accommodated with fairly standard cockpit setups.

Shared dimensions include the stock 160mm fork producing a 64.9 degree headtube angle with a 341mm bottom bracket and 435mm chainstay length. Riders looking for a little more may gravitate to the 170mm fork option for a slightly slacker headtube and increased trail measurement.

Fit is determined with rider height as well as leg and arm length. Riders with notably longer or short legs may up or down size. If you find yourself between sizes chat with our team about fit details. This is particularly important for riders between Small and Medium or Large and X-Large as some of the geo changes are more notable than between the Medium and Large Ripmo AF bikes.

Questions on sizing? Get in touch with our team and we are happy to go over your details to ensure we get you on the right size bike. We can help you define which size will give you a more confident fit and feel for your riding terrain and style.

The Deore drivetrain is the most cost-conscious Shimano option. Shimano drivetrains are known for their crisp shifting.

Some riders may upgrade the chain for a bit smoother performance.

As chain, cassette and chain ring are wear items these are often upgraded later in the service life.

Deore Wheel and Tire Details

Ibis’ Blackbird Send alloy wheel is a great spec for the Deore build. The 35mm internal rim width allows a high volume tire shape for lower PSI as well as improved traction.

A common wheel upgrade to the stock Deore wheel is adding CushCore rim protection. This lessens the chance of rim damage or cut sidewalls.

The Maxxis Assegai 2.5″ EXO Plus front tire is a great choice for aggressive riding. Similarly the DHR II EXO Plus provides riders with a robust option. Some riders may prefer the added protection and damping of Double Down sidewalls. These are popular in aggressive terrain as well as allow riders even lower PSI for improved traction.

Some lighter riders may prefer the quicker acceleration of the EXO sidewall.

Riders looking for a faster rolling tire setup should investigate swapping the Assegai for a DHF. And in the rear an Aggressor instead of the DHR II is a faster accelerating option.

Already have a favorite tire pairing? Let’s get it on your Ripmo AF right off the bat.

Deore Cockpit & Brakes Details

No matter which model or brand you’re shopping, to get the fit right you might be swapping or upgrading handlebar and stem! Some riders will prefer a 35mm diameter combo. Others will need a taller rise handlebar. Some prefer to upgrade to carbon options to improve damping and take some of the abuse our of their hands. BikeCo has you covered.

Is there a grip / bar / stem combo you like? No problem, we can get your bike spec perfect for you.

Common cockpit upgrades to the Ripmo AF Deore cockpit?

Alloy handlebars from Renthal and Tag in 35mm diameter are great to dial in rise options.

However the most popular cockpit upgrade is carbon 35mm handlebars. Carbon handlebars add damping to the aluminum AF bike. Most popular are the OneUp or Tag carbon bars upgrades. Both of these manufacturers feature design and layup considerations to maximize damping while reducing hand fatigue.

Sizing you handlebar is important. MTB bars are offered with different levels of stiffness. When you trim a bar this is modified (as you trim the bar you lower the leverage ratio). Getting a bar right for your weight and riding style goes a long way to improving your trail experience. Ideally riders should balance power transfer with bars compliant enough to minimize hand fatigue.

Chat with our team for details on handlebar setup differences for your MTB.

A common upgrade in MTB is finding brakes that compliment your riding style. Read on for details on various brake brands personality. BikeCo stocks #theBestinMTB and curates our selection to ensure unbeatable quality and reliability.

Popular Brake Swaps & Upgrades to the Ibis Ripmo AF Deore

BikeCo offers brakes from Shimano, TRP, Hope and Magura. This allows us to cover a wide range or rider preference with top quality brands.

The Deore complete is spec’d with 4-piston Shimano Deore M6120 brakes. This is a pretty popular option.

Shimano brakes provide good power with snappy performance. This is in part from their short lever throw. Many riders gravitate to Shimano SLX, XT and XTR brakes.

Other riders may prefer brakes with more modulation. Modulation is how much “feel” or lever stroke there is between applying the brakes and full application.

TRP brakes provide a little more power with slightly improved modulation compared to Shimano.

Riders looking for even great modulation should review Hope and Magura brakes.

The new Hope Tech 4 lineup increased their total power in-line with Shimano and Magura without compromising their amazing modulation.
