If you have questions on which HD6 build is right for you don’t hesitate to reach out to our team for more details. Let’s look at how and where you ride as well as your budget and aspirations to dial in the best factory kit, semi-custom or full custom HD6 build.

Ibis HD6 Kit Differences

The HD6 is offered in three SRAM and three Shimano completes.

Deore versus SLX versus XT Build

The HD6 Deore kit is the most cost-conscious of the Shimano bikes. Deore is slightly heavier than SLX, which will be slightly heavier than the XT components. All but have the smooth Shimano feel although the SLX and XT probably retain that feeling longer into their service life.

The Deore features a Performance fork while the SLX and XT feature the FOX Factory series with additional compression control. That said, many riders will update the Performance Fork with the improved damper to create a Performance Elite offering.

The HD6 XT build does jump to the carbon Ibis HiFi bars as well as the Industry Nine A318 stem. Bars and stem however are often changed for customer preference to OneUp, Tag or Renthal so this isn’t always a decisive factor.

Check out the Upgrade and Swap tab to learn about the bits we most often see swapped or changed on the HD6 Shimano builds.

Compare Ibis HD6 Kits: SRAM

Ibis builds the HD6 in the cable driven GX complete as well as the wireless GX AXS Transmission and X0 AXS Transmission builds.

The GX build provides a lot of value with Factory Suspension and room to grow on any wear or upgrade bits down the line.

The GX Transmission and X0 Transmission builds provide wireless shifting and tuning, not to mention Transmission’s design is the strongest and longest lasting in each price category. AXS Transmission has been a wildly popular option since its release.

Both Transmission builds are frequently upgraded to carbon wheels. Ibis offers their carbon rims with i9 hubs as an upgrade – but most riders shopping that level of upgrade will chat with us about getting handbuilt wheels with choices of hubs, hub colors, spokes, nipple colors as well as rim options.

Don’t be shy – bikes at this level deserve the research and our team is here with the answers to get you on the best build for your riding and budget.

Ibis HD6 Common Upgrades and Swaps. Bars / Cockpit, Brakes, Wireless Shifting, Pro Tune Suspension, Custom Wheels, Tires

Ibis HD6 Upgrades and Swaps

While Ibis specs a great bike “out of the box” there are some common areas we see riders take advantage of part swaps or upgrades particularly at time of purchase.

Getting your bike right is important to everyone on our team. There are a variety of parts that really modify a bike’s performance and we’re happy to help you get your dream bike delivered with that dream spec.

Common Ibis Upgrades

There are a handful of common swaps and upgrades we will see on just about any bike that leaves the shop. Many of these are personal preferences, some are performance based and others may be budget considerations.

Rider Contact Points

Grips, saddles and new pedals are common swaps, upgrades and additions. (remember bikes at this level do not come with pedals)

We offer a variety of the best in all of these categories and if we don’t have your favorite in stock we’re happy to look into it with you.

Tires

Have a go-to tire setup? Let’s get you dialed. Want a Double Down front or EXO Plus rear? Prefer the DHF? Something else? No problems.

Cockpit

Many riders will update the Ibis 31.8 cockpit for a 35mm handlebar and stem combo from Renthal, OneUp, Tag or RaceFace.

Brakes

Really one of the most important bits to your bike’s personality. Getting the right brake system and rotor selection makes a big difference on how comfortable and confident you’ll be on your bike.

Popular brake options here at BikeCo.com include Shimano, TRP, Hope and Magura.

Shimano brakes offer great overall power with quick power application, in part from the shorter brake lever and how that modifies the total lever throw.

TRP ride similar to Shimano with a bit more overall power and slightly better modulation.

Hope and Magura both have more modulation than Shimano or TRP, bringing power on through a longer lever stroke or through modified leverage rates.

Hope’s latest Tech 4 series have improved their overall power to be in the Shimano and Magura power range while keeping the great modulation feel.

Magura brakes offer excellent overall power as well as great modulation. Your Magura brakes can be fine tuned with a variety of brake levers to modify modulation feel as well. Magura brakes are available in a variety of price points and are popular upgrades or swaps across all of the HD6 builds.

Custom Wheels

Many riders will find that custom wheels provide unmatched performance. Whether you’re shopping aluminum or carbon our team of expert wheel builders will produce the best final product on the market.

NOX and Ibis are the most popular carbon rims while WTB, RideFast and Factor aluminum rims are great options.

Hub options include Chris King, Industry Nine, Factor and the silent Onyx Vesper options.

Pro Tune Suspension

Take your bike’s performance to the next level with our proprietary Pro Tune Suspension. Our team will custom tune your FOX fork and rear shock and narrow the performance from the FOX Factory range to a more precise setup designed for your riding style, aggression, ground speed, size and terrain.

This is one of the biggest upgrades to any bike – having the suspension dialed in as well as having a resource like BikeCo to help you fine tune the bike at time of delivery and as your riding speeds increase!

BikeCo Pro Tune Suspension – because Every Click Counts.

Dialing in the perfect HD6 Build

Still have questions? If you’re here to compare Ibis HD6 kits we’d expect you to have questions! Don’t be shy, our team is here to help you define what you need to take your bike build from “this is good” to “man, this is DIALED.”

Ibis HD6 Geometry

On the HD6 Ibis has produced a five model size run: Small, Medium, Extra Medium, Large and Extra Large. This range provides riders improved access to the ideal fit.

The HD6 features a 64 degree headtube angle across all sizes giving it a planted feel in the gnarliest terrain at big speeds.

Helping the bike’s confidence in full-tilt aggressive riding is the 64 degree headtube angle’s correlating wheelbase and trail measurements.

Sizing the Ibis HD6

While Ibis provides a decent sizing window on their bikes for clients to review the ideal HD6 size is based almost equally on two factors: rider height as well as leg (inseam) and arm length (wingspan). Other factors to consider are your overall flexibility, your riding style and ground speed.

Riders who find their height in the cross-over of sizes will weigh all of these to determine which of the HD6’s 5 sizes is the best fit.

Those with longer legs tend to up-size to improve riding position. Along with allowing improved cockpit and saddle locations a longer wheelbase produces a bike with a bit more overall speed capacity that isn’t quite as snappy as a smaller size. Many racers will look to run the longest bike they can manage to take advantage of this ground speed feel.

Riders between sizes with longer torsos, shorter inseams, or looking for a more “poppy” trail feel tend to down-size.

Although, with modern MTB frames designed to accommodate increased dropper post lengths riders who prefer the added wheelbase may still up-size, so long as the reach doesn’t compromise stem size availability or put a rider “too far” over the front wheel.

If you have sizing questions on sizing the HD6 work with our sales team. They will help you understand how size, riding style, terrain and riding aspirations to dial in your choice.
