A quality headset, kept appropriately adjusted will last the service life of your bike.
Over the lifespan of your bike top tier headsets like the Cane Creek 110 and Chris King options won’t need to be replaced saving you time, money and effort.
The most popular headset upgrade is to the US Made Chris King options available in a variety of colors.
Whether you’re installing or servicing an Integrated or a Zero Stack headset you have some options to consider. Knowing when it’s best to use bearing retainer or grease will go a long way to keeping your headset in adjustment and quiet!
Opinions vary on bearing retainer in the eMTB and MTB world – but over the years I’ve generally preferred proper bearing retainer across all brands of bikes and carbon fiber without issue for bearings or the press fit bearing assemblies.
If you’re chasing creaks from the front of your bike and see “polished” marks on your integrated or dropset headset bearings you most likely have movement and found at least some of the noise.
I use grease on the steerer interface or any of the variety of spacers you might find for cable routing (such as with Mondraker bikes) or assembly.
