Custom Ibis Ripley with Float X

Adding some Enduro punch to the Ibis Ripley.

Couple mods worth noting on this Ripley build: the rear shock has been swapped to the FOX Float X giving the bike a bit more rear damper heat capacity as well as some additional compression tuning options. The front of this bike features FOX 36 with travel modification to maintain the Ripley’s quick handling and playful personality. The GRIP2 damper provides some additional compression tuning as well compared to the spec’d FIT4. Now, for riders who might not be looking to go quite as burly the FOX 34 offers a GRIP2 damper option as well, however it doesn’t have the burp valves and isn’t quite as stiff.

This client has gone with high volume tires to add even a touch more grip and suspension to the bike. Remember, a lot of your small bump compliance comes from tire and PSI setup particularly when leaning the bike on flat corners where the suspension becomes less effective (more on that coming hopefully late next week in a new video series)

This build started with the Ibis XT Complete. The XT Ibis build features the 1×12 HyperGlide + drivetrain as well as Shimano’s most popular 4 piston XT brakes.

From there our team worked with the client to understand their riding needs to dial in the spec.

Industry Nine Hubs on RideFast Rims

The industry Nine Hydra hubs provide riders quick engagement, a variety of awesome colorways and are Made in the USA.

RideFast LocoMoto rims are a cost conscious aluminum option with attention to detail across the design. In particular these LocoMoto rims feature a 30mm internal rim width, a popular width for a lot of riders.

Slightly narrower than the stock Ibis 35mm internal width rims the LocoMoto creates a bit more radius on the mounted tire’s shape.

Rim Width: Cornering & Support

Wider rims benefit many riders providing increased volume which allows a lower PSI to support the same weight. This lower PSI allows more conformity in the tire which translates to increased grip.

The other side of the coin with wider rims is the effect on cornering lugs. The wider mounting surface slightly “squares off” the tire pulling the cornering lugs more vertical. This can compromise traction during high lean angle corners.

Narrower rims, and when we say “narrow” we mean the kind of 29-33 range these days, with the increased tire radius pull the cornering knobs outside of the sidewall shape. This allows riders to lean deep into corners without riding past the cornering knobs.

The lower volume of a narrower rim will require greater PSI for support. This can compromise traction if it takes so much pressure to keep you off the rims that the tire can’t conform and stick to the trail. This is where the wide range of sidewall support options helps dial in performance by the way.

An option to help keep your rims true and minimize snake bite tire cuts is to add CushCore rim protection to your setup.

CushCore protection is available in both PRO and XC. Many riders mix and match or run only one CushCore depending on their requirements.

SRAM AXS technology has proven robust and reliable. We’ve put a lot of riders out on the XX1 and X01 setups with great results. Crisp performance, excellent battery life and the clean lines without shifting or adjustable seatpost cables are most often mentioned as favorites with the AXS drivetrain and Reverb AXS seatpost.

Chris King inset headsets reduce load on the frame being a “one and done” product. With simple service your headset will easily last the frame’s service life.

This build features 30mm of  spacers so the rider can dial in the perfect setup. Modern bikes have tended to run taller cockpit setups for improved power transfer particularly in steep chutes.  When your handlebars are too low in steep terrain the bike will feel like it’s trying to “suck” out under you. Having your hands in a proper “power” position gives you the leverage to aggressively push through the steeps.

Ibis S35 Carbon rims laced to Chris King hubs


Ibis S35 carbon rims are a popular option for riders looking for a bit more compliance in their carbon hoops. Definitely not “noodle-y” the Ibis rims allow lighter riders or those without the ground speeds for ultra rigid options to improve small bump compliance and tire tracking. The Ibis’ rims are so popular it’s common to see them on other frame manufactures builds as well! On this build the Ibis rims are laced to Chris King hubs with DT Swiss Competition spokes.

Magura brakes provide riders excellent modulation, power, long service intervals as well as tuneability with a variety of levers, rotors, rotor sizes and pad compounds. The most popular lever for the Magura MT7 brakes is currently the HC3 offering. The Magura HC3 brake lever provides easy leverage ratio as well as fit adjustment. The HC3 lever’s clear adjustment lines give riders a reference point to fine tune performance.

Another popular feature on the Magura brakes are the removable piston accents. Many riders pop these out for a quick spray paint or paint pen customization!

More popular components here at BikeCo. Chris King hubs are made in the USA, provide great engagement and with simple service are essentially lifetime hubs. DT Swiss spokes provide riders the most consistency production run to run. DT’s wire selection and manufacturing mean their spokes are second to none in terms of mechanical performance attributes.  SRAM Eagle cassettes are now available in 10-52t configurations as well as the 10-50t. The difference is the 52t requires the newer derailleur pulleys (which are larger). These are available on all AXS derailleurs as well as the new MAX mechanical derailleurs.

Ibis HD5 Mullet

Ibis HD5 Mullet

Well, like any great mystery there’s only one image of this one, but at least it’s not blurry… This Ibis HD5 Mullet was wrapped up late but we had to shoot it before it went to it’s new home.

This bike features a slightly under-traveled fork to keep the mullet’s 29″ front end at a similar total height of the 27.5″ option. This gives the bike a more “as designed” headtube angle and therefor trail measurement.

Building a Mullet with the same amount of fork travel would notably slacken the bike out. When you go too slack with a bike it doesn’t want to change direction due to increase in the wheel flop as well as the modified contact points.

Working to keep the axle to crown measurement closer to the 27.5″ design allows BikeCo’s mullet builds to maintain a personality closer to the stock design. The advantages of the bigger wheel include increased angle of attack from the larger diameter, slightly mellower handling from the larger wheel / mass as well as notably improved braking.

Highlights of this Mullet HD5

Built for a long-time BikeCo client this is a special bike and it was great to see it leave the shop with a stoked rider.

BikeCo Pro Tune suspension front and rear help personalize the performance window and setup.

Industry Nine stem and Chris King inset headset in orange give the bike some added pop. One-Up carbon bar, seatpost and chain guide. SRAM X01 AXS drivetrain with a 52t copper cassette and a Wolf Tooth Oval chainring drive the bike. Magura MT7 with HC3 levers and Hope 2 piece orange rotors stop it.

And once again this build is highlighted with custom Chris King wheels. The matte mango King hubs are laced to WTB aluminum KOM Tough rims with DT Swiss spokes.

Chris King hubs, serviced approximately yearly, have a near infinite service life. King products are made in Portland Oregon giving your bike some Made in the USA credibility. Wolf Tooth as well as some Industry Nine products are as well.

Mullet Ibis HD5

Enjoy a couple photos of this Mullet Ibis HD5 before it heads to it’s new home.

Mullet setups consist of a 29″ front fork and wheel with a 27.5″ rear wheel. Generally mullet bikes are based around 27.5″ frames to keep the bottom bracket from dropping as it would on a 29″ bike.

The larger front wheel offers some interesting advantages that mullet riders take advantage of. Notably are the improved roll over or angle of attack from the larger diameter, the slightly mellowed steering input from the larger wheel as well as improved braking performance.

When we first started testing Mullet HD5 setups we gained a lot of insight from BikeCo Pro Rider Brian Lopes. Brian pointed out how much harder he could confidently get on the brakes before and even into a corner on the larger front wheel.

With a smaller rear tire riders are also able to stay lower on the bike in the steeps or the air. The 27.5″ rear tends to be faster and more agile around tight corners in steep terrain as well. This is one of the reasons you see so many Mullet’s on the EWS circuit – although you may have to look closely as not every brand acknowledges the larger wheel option!

Building a Mullet

We’ve been testing a variety of mullet setups over the past couple seasons. What we’ve found is running a slightly under-traveled fork helps maintain the bike’s personality and performance.

Since the last few mm’s of your bike’s suspension really aren’t where you’re living through the stroke few riders notice that compromise. Compare this to adding a bunch of trail and headtube angle (and with those adding wheel flop) which riders will notice quickly when trying to change directions. Almost every rider leans towards having better handling!

The larger front wheel also creates some “false travel” to make up for some of the change to accommodate the axle to crown measurement.

Build Details

This HD5 build is highlighted with some of the best bits available in MTB.

FOX Factory Suspension front and rear is Pro Tuned for a personalized setup specific to rider weight, aggression, ground speeds and terrain. With Pro Tune suspension we narrow FOX’s performance range for an individual client. This means every click is a more minute adjustment providing riders even more performance from their FOX forks and shocks.

SRAM X01 AXS shift pod and rear derailleur control a 52t copper cassette and 12sp copper chain pulled by RaceFace Next-R carbon cranks and a Wolf Tooth chainring. The X01 AXS derailleur is slightly more robust than the XX1 counterpart – great for aggressive riding in burly terrain.

Red highlights across the bike include an Industry Nine stem as well as Chris King headset.

Red Chris King hubs are laced to WTB rims built in-house. A variety of DT Swiss spokes are available depending on performance and weight goals.

Keeping this Mullet HD5 under control in the steeps are Magura HC rotors with Magura MT5 brakes with HC levers.

The Ibis Ripmo’s second evolution takes the bike to another level in both pedaling efficiency as well as downhill capacity.  The DW Suspension ratios were modified to allow riders to choose between air and coil shock options.

Most riders will gravitate to the FOX Float X2 air shock. With it’s high and low speed rebound as well as high and low speed compression the X2 can be tuned to be lively under power while keeping a confident personality in burlier terrain.

Ibis Ripley

The current Ibis Ripley maintains the poppy, fun personality riders came to expect from the trail / light enduro 29er with a notable improvement: increased lateral stiffness.

By increasing the Ripley’s lateral stiffness Ibis built a trail bike capable of attacking light enduro terrain even for heavier riders, which may have felt the previous frame was just a bit light when heavier riders cornered hard.

The Ripley is capable of carrying up to 2.6″ tires providing the ability to “tire up” or “tire down” depending on your riding.

Ibis Mojo

The “Modern Trailbike” is a pretty wide ranging term? Well, modern trailbikes do have to excel in more areas than ever. Does a trailbike mean all day adventure rides? After work rips with your friends? Being able to lean into your favorite chunky trail? Yes, of course.
