Yeti SB130 Lunch Ride – All You Can Eat!

Yeti SB130 Lunch Ride Custom

So, the 160mm fork and extended travel rear shock, about 137mm of total travel, on the SB130 make it a lunch ride. But what happens when you take that Yeti SB130 Lunch Ride suspension to the next level with a FOX 38 and FOX Float X2? Well its ready for the all day, sit in the restaurant till they kick you out all you care to eat Lunch Ride right?

SRAM AXS with XX1 Copper Chain

This X01 AXS kit is set off with an XX1 Copper Chain and a hint of accent color with the OneUp Chain Guide & Bash.

The orange upper guide helps with chain retention in rough terrain, or when you time backwards in corners, etc. You can see how the black bash guide sits slightly lower than the chain ring providing protection from rocks and logs you might come across.

Many riders think that the bash guide is only for riders really riding the super gnarly stuff, but, from my experience I’m much more likely to smack my chain ring trying to climb technical stuff.

Magua MT7 brakes, HC Rotor and i9 Hubs laced to WTB rims

So, let’s get it straight: Custom is still a thing! But, you might have to wait a bit for your dream parts.

We’re seeing a lot of riders take advantage of availability to get on trail while waiting for some bits. Example: custom Hope brakes or like Shimano Saint brakes that might have a long ship ETA riders are taking delivery with the stock brakes and then flipping them on the used market once the other bits come in. We’re seeing this with stock wheels too if you’re waiting for that dream King color or whatever.

In this bike’s case i9 has had great turnaround times and the turquoise hubs are a great accent to the orange fork and a nod to the Yeti racing heritage. These are handbuilt wheels by our team laced to WTB rims with DT Swiss Spokes. BikeCo has some of the best wheel builders in MTB and we are able to fine tune your build to your riding style, ground speeds and weight. Adding compliance or stiffness to the build depending on requirements makes a big difference in total traction.

Stopping this beast are 4 piston Magura MT7 HC3 brakes – which BikeCo keeps great stock on and are an easy update to your build!

Chris King Inset in Yeti SB130 Frame

Unlike pressfit headsets Inset options are relatively easy to change (and don’t add stress to the frame’s headtube driving cups in and out).

If your bike has a pressfit headset why not put in a rebuildable Chris King headset that will last the life of the frame?

If your bike, like the Yeti lineup, features Inset headsets the Chris King is still a lifetime headset with some basic maintenance. And available in a variety of colors like this Matte Mango you can accent your bikes’ cockpit with a touch of flare.

Mullet Yeti SB140 Build

Mullet Yeti SB140

Enjoy a few shots of this Mullet Yeti SB140 build before it heads to it’s new home.

The “mullet” configuration, somewhat ironically given the hairstyle, features a larger front wheel. With Yeti Mullet’s that means a 29″ front on the 27.5″ frames like the SB140 or SB165.

Increasing the front wheel’s diameter produces some notable performance differences.

The three most notable changes in a mullet Yeti SB140 are:

Increased Roll Over: the lower angle of attack means the wheel is less likely to “chalk” on terrain costing you momentum. This is particularly notable riding in steep terrain.

Improved Front Wheel Braking Power: the longer contact patch from the increased wheel circumference allows more powerful braking.

Steering “Damper”: the larger wheel provides a bit more “mellow” or slower input to the steering which can increase confidence particularly at speed.

Some advantages of the smaller rear wheel, rather than going to a 29er include:

Slightly faster acceleration with the smaller wheel, although carrying top speed tends to lend itself to the 29er.

The smaller wheel also allows riders to get lower on the bike in steep terrain or jumps.

PNW Handlebar & Remote

PNW remotes and handlebars are popular updates to cockpits. Particularly the PNW remote which has a padded, high grip patch that works well in sloppy, wet conditions.

Yeti SB140 Complete

More riders are gravitating to the oval chain rings like this option from AbsoluteBLACK. Compatible with both SRAM and Shimano drivetrains the oval rings are designed to ease the load on your muscles, and knees for us grey hair riders, allowing you more power in the power position.

Yeti SB140 Mullet, Ice Pick Headtube Badge

This image is mainly for me… I always love the detail that goes into the Yeti Ice Pick headtube badge. It’s the little details that make a big difference. Yeti’s commitment to cutting edge geometry, the Switch Infinity Suspension, great carbon options in both their Carbon & Turq series all the way down to the graphics and headtube. Love it.

Ibis Ripmo with RideFast LocoMoto Rims

Ibis Ripmo with RideFast Rims

Enjoy some shots of this Ibis Ripmo with RideFast LocoMoto rims laced to Industry Nine hubs.

This build started with the Ibis XT Complete. The XT Ibis build features the 1×12 HyperGlide + drivetrain as well as Shimano’s most popular 4 piston XT brakes.

From there our team worked with the client to understand their riding needs to dial in the spec.

Industry Nine Hubs on RideFast LocoMoto rims

Industry Nine Hubs on RideFast Rims

The industry Nine Hydra hubs provide riders quick engagement, a variety of awesome colorways and are Made in the USA.

RideFast LocoMoto rims are a cost conscious aluminum option with attention to detail across the design. In particular these LocoMoto rims feature a 30mm internal rim width, a popular width for a lot of riders.

Slightly narrower than the stock Ibis 35mm internal width rims the LocoMoto creates a bit more radius on the mounted tire’s shape.

RideFast LocoMoto rim with tire mounted

Rim Width: Cornering & Support

Wider rims benefit many riders providing increased volume which allows a lower PSI to support the same weight. This lower PSI allows more conformity in the tire which translates to increased grip.

The other side of the coin with wider rims is the effect on cornering lugs. The wider mounting surface slightly “squares off” the tire pulling the cornering lugs more vertical. This can compromise traction during high lean angle corners.

Narrower rims, and when we say “narrow” we mean the kind of 29-33 range these days, with the increased tire radius pull the cornering knobs outside of the sidewall shape. This allows riders to lean deep into corners without riding past the cornering knobs.

The lower volume of a narrower rim will require greater PSI for support. This can compromise traction if it takes so much pressure to keep you off the rims that the tire can’t conform and stick to the trail. This is where the wide range of sidewall support options helps dial in performance by the way.

CushCore: Support & Protection

An option to help keep your rims true and minimize snake bite tire cuts is to add CushCore rim protection to your setup.

CushCore protection is available in both PRO and XC. Many riders mix and match or run only one CushCore depending on their requirements.

You can shop rim protection options here or use the chat, email or call and our team will help dial you in.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Carbon 2021 Details

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Complete

We’re excited to introduce the Mondraker brand to our BikeCo.com clients. Enjoy some detail shots of the 2021 Mondraker SuperFoxy R Carbon 29er. This is a 160mm travel frame with a 170mm fork setup. Keep reading for more details and photos.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R

Mondraker was ahead of the curve with the longer top tube / reach measurements and steeper seat tube angles. What was named “Forward Geometry” has become the new expected standard as bikes are capable of bigger speeds in gnarlier terrain.

The SuperFoxy R has a variety of unique aspects both visually and performance oriented that put it on the short list for Enduro riders shopping new bikes.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Front Triangle

One of the first things to jump out at you visually on the Mondraker lineup is the top tube design. The “short” vertically while normal width tube saves considerable weight while providing plenty of strength and lateral rigidity to the bike.

This thin top tube also creates the visual illusion that the bikes are really, really long – but when you check the numbers they’re absolutely in line with the modern expectations.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Forward Geometry

Another look at the top tube. As mentioned Mondraker was ahead, or Forward on the geometry changes – but as the rest of the leading manufacturers saw the benefits the Mondraker’s aren’t ridden any different positionally than other modern bikes per class.

Another thing to look at – the web images of the Mondraker SuperFoxy R don’t do it ANY justice. In the natural light the metal flake blue and the yellow accents are both stunning!

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Axle Flip Chip

Mondraker Chainstay Flip Chip

Riders can adjust the axle flip chip to modify the chainstay length. This helps fine tune the balance point for varying steepness in terrain. It also modifies the wheelbase and chainstay versus front center balance by 10mm depending on setting.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R rear brake mount

Another look at the chainstay flip chip. You’ll also notice the unique brake mount on the lower stay. Using the lower stay as the brake mount allowed designers to minimize the seat stays saving weight without sacrificing performance. The SuperBoost rear hub also provides additional stiffness allowing a lighter rear triangle on the Mondraker.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Suspension Design

Here’s a look at the non-drive side of the SuperFoxy R. Suspension linkage points are visible as well as the Ohlins’ shock on the Mondraker Zero design.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Lower Pivot

Drive side of the SuperFoxy R with cranks, chain slap protector and lower linkage areas.

Ohlins MTB Shock

Ohlins HSC (Compression) adjuster switch.

Ohlins Shock Adjustment

Ohlins LSC (Compression) and rebound adjustment.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Carbon Monoblock

The carbon monoblock upper pivot on the SuperFoxy R illustrates a couple of key design concepts.

First notice the double shear rear triangle mounts – this again allows a lighter rear triangle to stand up to the modern trail riding. The robust connection between left and right linkage helps minimize deflection.

By minimizing deflection your bearings are less likely to be thrust loaded which will notably increase service life – and quiet performance.

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Headtube

I love the way the top tube and top tube gusset blend into the Mondraker Headtube.

This is a bike that really comes alive in the natural light…

Mondraker SuperFoxy R Profile

The 2021 Mondraker SuperFoxy R is an enduro proven, long travel 29er with enough nimbleness to be fun on everything from your medium chunky local trails all the way to big race course or lift assist riding.

The most popular upgrades on this build are Magura Brakes (usually MT5 or MT7s), a GRIP2 damper for the fork (adds high and low speed compression as well as high and low speed rebound controls) as well as a rider’s favorite (if you have one) cockpit and saddle.

Currently we have the SuperFoxy R available in Size Large ready to ship! Check it out below

Magura MT7 Raceline brakes provide great modulation and stopping power. Ergon saddle and Deity grips not only have the right accent colors but provide confident, comfortable options for a wide range of riders.

The SRAM AXS drivetrain provides crisp shifting and clean installation. XX1 10-52t rainbow cassette and chain bring a touch of bling to the black and teal build.

Yeti SB130 Custom SRAM AXS Drivetrain

Cane Creek eeWing cranks have been gaining momentum on bikes at this level. Designed as a titanium alternative to carbon fiber cranks Cane Creek advertises the eeWings as lighter and stiffer than carbon. The titanium fabrication adds a touch of elegance. Small welds remind riders of previous dream bikes when metal builds were more common.

The OneUp Bash and Guide is the perfect accent hue while helping keep the chainring off rocks or logs you’ll encounter ripping down trail.

Magura MT7 Raceline Lever detail

Magura’s HC3 lever provides riders the ultimate adjustability. Easily control reach as well as leverage. One of the best aspects to the adjustments of the HC3 lever is the delineation lines to help you fine tune setup. Yeti SB140 Mullet: AXS, Hope, Onyx

Yeti SB140 Mullet

Custom Yeti SB140 Mullet with AXS, Hope, Onyx and more

This Yeti SB140 Mullet has slightly less travel than Yeti’s mullet geometry. With a lower 29″ front end the SB140’s on trail performance is much closer to the balance expected in the 27.5″ configuration.

Attention to detail, and a bit of Covid availability compromise are seen tip to tail on this bike.

Yeti SB140 Ron Burgundy Top Tube

The Yeti SB140 Ron (Burgundy) frame really comes alive in natural UV light. With such an original and bold color this build uses shades of gray, black and silver tones for contrast.

Custom color Hope Tech3 V4 Brakes by BikeCo

Whether you’re looking for small subtly or bold colors our Custom Hope Brake Builder allows just the right accents to your build. Hope brakes offer excellent modulation and power.  Adjustable reach and bite point controls are shown here.  This build features Hope to SRAM 1 piece clamps for a clean cockpit setup. SRAM AXS drivetrain provides crisp, reliable shifting without a cable further cleaning the cockpit look.

Somewhat off topic: The pyramid grip surface on the Deity grips reminds me of perspective and light art classes from school…

Absolute Black Oil Slick Oval Chainring

The Absolute Black oval chain ring in Oil Slick / Rainbow, black XX1 AXS chain and titanium Cane Creek eeWings cranks offer nice contract on the drivetrain. A carbon MRP upper guide helps with chain retention in the chunkier terrain.

HT Components T1 pedals

HT Components T1 pedals are extremely popular with Enduro and Trail riders. Available in a variety of colors the T1 pedals tie in well with the medium grays on this build. One trick to the T1 pedals is to run them slightly tighter on the release than you might have run previous pedals. It might seem counter intuitive but running them slightly tighter improves the clip out feel making it easier for many riders.

SB140 Mullet Build by BikeCo

Chris King Dropset

Frames with integrated headsets can still take advantage of the Chris King precision performance. DropSet headsets provide unmatched quality of bearings and a variety of colors to accent your build. The King bearing is slightly taller than the Cane Creek integrated option which leads to this small gap on many frames like the Yeti SB140. This gap doesn’t really effect performance and I consider it akin to a badge of honor to run another American made component on my bike!

This SB140 has 20mm of carbon spacers under the stem. Modern bikes have gone back to a bit taller handlebars for improved performance particularly in steep terrain. When your hands are too low the bike often feels like it is being “pulled” backwards out from underneath you in chutes. Having your hands in the proper power position gives you the leverage to essentially “punch back” when the trail tries to take your bike from you!

This client chose the Industry Nine A318 stem in pink to acknowledge Cancer Awareness. Chromag bars weren’t his first choice, but with availability issues they were the best option with proper rise and a good sweep and carbon layup. More and more manufacturers are catching back up (Shimano is one big exception – but more on that some other time) meaning that Covid Compromise is effecting less and less builds.

Mullet SB140

Another product we’re seeing more and more riders gravitate to are Onyx hubs. Designed for instant engagement and silent freewheeling these hubs are available in a range of colors to accent your build.

The silent hub is much more notably than you might think – when I wheel Onyx bikes out to take pictures there’s always a “what’s missing” feeling until I remember it’s the Onyx hubs… Onyx hubs silent engagement are a touch heavier than other options – but for riders looking to really hear what their tires are doing and what’s around them they’re a cool option.

In the market for a custom bike? Semi-custom? Factory build with upgrades? Or just a stock build? In every case BikeCo is your resource.  We offer the best spec, setup, tune and pricing in MTB. We invite you to chat, email or call our staff today.

See you on the trails!

Custom Ibis Ripmo: AXS, King, Magura

Custom Ibis Ripmo with SRAM AXS, Chris King and Magura Brakes

Custom Ibis Ripmo: SRAM AXS, Chris King, Magura

Enjoy some shots of this Ibis Ripmo before it heads to it’s new home. This Custom Ibis Ripmo features SRAM AXS, Chris King, Magura brakes and more.

SRAM AXS technology has proven robust and reliable. We’ve put a lot of riders out on the XX1 and X01 setups with great results. Crisp performance, excellent battery life and the clean lines without shifting or adjustable seatpost cables are most often mentioned as favorites with the AXS drivetrain and Reverb AXS seatpost.

RockShox Reverb Controller

The RockShox Reverb AXS controller and Magura MT7 brake could be paired with a Magura specialty mount for an even cleaner look. However, the upside to individual clamp mounts is improved finite adjustability. Which would you choose? (good problems to have either way right?)

RaceFace Kash Money Stem

The RaceFace Kash Money stem is a great colorway to accent a lot of builds. Imagine this stem with the new SRAM copper drivetrain…

Chris King inset headsets reduce load on the frame being a “one and done” product. With simple service your headset will easily last the frame’s service life.

This build features 30mm of  spacers so the rider can dial in the perfect setup. Modern bikes have tended to run taller cockpit setups for improved power transfer particularly in steep chutes.  When your handlebars are too low in steep terrain the bike will feel like it’s trying to “suck” out under you. Having your hands in a proper “power” position gives you the leverage to aggressively push through the steeps.

Handbuilt wheels by BikeCo.com

Ibis S35 Carbon rims laced to Chris King hubs

Ibis S35 carbon rims are a popular option for riders looking for a bit more compliance in their carbon hoops. Definitely not “noodle-y” the Ibis rims allow lighter riders or those without the ground speeds for ultra rigid options to improve small bump compliance and tire tracking. The Ibis’ rims are so popular it’s common to see them on other frame manufactures builds as well! On this build the Ibis rims are laced to Chris King hubs with DT Swiss Competition spokes.

Magura MT7 4 piston caliper detail

Magura brakes provide riders excellent modulation, power, long service intervals as well as tuneability with a variety of levers, rotors, rotor sizes and pad compounds. The most popular lever for the Magura MT7 brakes is currently the HC3 offering. The Magura HC3 brake lever provides easy leverage ratio as well as fit adjustment. The HC3 lever’s clear adjustment lines give riders a reference point to fine tune performance.

Another popular feature on the Magura brakes are the removable piston accents. Many riders pop these out for a quick spray paint or paint pen customization!

Chris King and SRAM Logos on wheel build

More popular components here at BikeCo. Chris King hubs are made in the USA, provide great engagement and with simple service are essentially lifetime hubs. DT Swiss spokes provide riders the most consistency production run to run. DT’s wire selection and manufacturing mean their spokes are second to none in terms of mechanical performance attributes.  SRAM Eagle cassettes are now available in 10-52t configurations as well as the 10-50t. The difference is the 52t requires the newer derailleur pulleys (which are larger). These are available on all AXS derailleurs as well as the new MAX mechanical derailleurs.

Peas & Carrots: Custom Mullet Yeti SB165

Custom Mullet Yeti SB165

Enjoy some shots of this custom Mullet Yeti SB165 build by BikeCo.com. This Yeti Moss Green frame is set off with orange accents from Fox Suspension as well as CushCore valve stems.

Park, big mountain and enduro riding are on the slate for this build. Contact points include Ergon GE1 Evo Factory Grips, Ergon SM Enduro saddle as well as HT Component Pedals.

BikeCo Pro Tune Decals on Fox 38 Fork

The 29″ front wheel provides additional roll over capacity while slightly mellowing the steering input. The smaller, stock, 27.5″ wheel in the rear gives riders more room to maneuver when jumping the bike as well as turns corners more quickly.  The slightly smaller circumference will accelerate more quickly when you jump on the power out of a corner.

Tag Metals MTB Stem and Bar combination

A popular “new” entrant to MTB at this level Tag Metals offer an excellent stem. Light and stiff the T1 stem transfers power well. The T1 Carbon bars are stiff enough to be effective without crossing into the “teeth rattler” realm some carbon bars are known to hit. Shop Handlebars here.

Another popular spec here at The Bike Company are Magura brakes. This bike features the MT7 brakes with HC levers. Magura’s 4 piston brakes allow riders to have both power and modulation. Modulation is defined as how the brake ramps into it’s power. For instance putting a stick in your spokes has a ton of instant stopping power, but, it’s gonna be hard to control. Conversely putting your foot on the back of the wheel (remember no brake bikes as kids?) isn’t going to stop you quick enough. These same issues are prevalent in MTB brakes. Some brakes bring the power on too quickly which can make them hard to control particularly in wet or low traction conditions. Other brakes lack the total power to confidently slow riders down. Magura has spent years dialing in the balance allowing riders to fine tune performance with rotor size and pad compounds. Find Magura Brakes Here.

Magura MT7 with HC Lever

HT Components Pedal mounted to RaceFace Next R Carbon Cranks

AE03 EVO+ Stealth pedals give the perfect look with their stealth graphics and black traction pins. RaceFace Next R carbon cranks transfer power to the SRAM drivetrain. Shop flat pedals here.
